Task Force Activities
Ø
Support has been and will continue to be offered to politicians in
an attempt to bring them to an understanding of the fallacy of the breed
specific /safety argument and the strength of dangerous dog legislation
Ø
Politicians will be contacted regularly to ensure we are aware of
the timing of the readings of the legislation as well as of points where we may
impact the process
Ø
A mass mailing in Ontario and NB has occurred, outlining our
initiative and messages to all of our CKC members. Members are urged to write
to their MPP's/MLA’s, the Premiers and other Ministers, offering the CKC's
stance and their support of that stance, as constituents.
Ø
Meetings should be scheduled with politicians in both Provinces to
offer a more detailed CKC input and support for Dangerous Dog Legislation as
well as the rationale for our opposition to Breed Specific Legislation.
Ø
We await word on the type of Committee that will be set up in
Ontario and the names of legislators who will sit on the Committee so we can
target those politicians particularly.
Ø
Correspondence has been written and is being sent to
Municipalities in Ontario outlining CKC concerns that will impact Municipal
government should Bill 132 be passed as written
Ø
Correspondence has been written and distributed to Clubs in
Ontario and New Brunswick outlining the Bills, their impacts and asking for Club
mobilization.
Ø
A CKC deposition was developed and given at the New Brunswick
Legislative Committee hearings. This message along with presentations given by
other organizations and individuals has had sufficient impact that the MLA who
is Bill 55’s proponent has announced that Breed Specific Legislation will not
continue to be a part of the Bill. Due to the unanimity of approach by
presenters he will be pursuing instead legislative support for a Bill targeting
Dangerous Dogs.
Ø
A generic presentation has been developed for use by Directors
when speaking on behalf of the CKC. This document will apply to all
jurisdictions and can be customized easily for presentation on short notice to
any level of government.
Ø
A Task Force message has been developed and is available to all
members providing a more detailed overview of the mandate
Ø
An overview is being put together of existing partnerships the CKC
has formed with like organizations (for example, OVMA, Humane Societies, etc.)
so that communications strategies can be put in place and implemented at
strategic times as we deal with the Draft Legislation.
Ø
Contact will be made with Agriculture
Canada to determine whether the federal government intends to take a position on
either or both pieces of legislation.
Ø
The requirement for a legal opinion and/or a lobbyist will be
researched and costed to determine whether this will be a necessity.
Ø
Speaking points have been developed. These will be available to
members who wish to use them in presentations they may be making to any level of
government, supporting the CKC’s position that Breed Specific Legislation does
not work
Ø
Liaison is on going with supporters to develop a roster of
speakers to support the CKC position on Bill 132 at Committee. A plan will be
developed for these deputations to ensure we are heard and understood by
legislators as we were in New Brunswick
Ø
A request has been made and the Canadian Dog Judges Association
has acquiesced to becoming involved in our communication strategy
Ø
A media framework will be established
Ø
Updates to the website will occur with increased frequency to
provide members with a forum for information exchange and to keep members up to
date on Task Force activities as well as ways they may become involved
Ø
Directors will attend Council meetings and Legislative Committees
to present the CKC position and to offer support in drafting Dangerous Dog
Legislation
Ø
All Directors in affected Provinces will be included as ex-officio
members of the Task Force, will have access to information and will be the
liaison for members in their zones. |
