About Lee Steeves
For those who don't know me, my husband Ken
Curren and I own
Regalridge Kennels. We have been members of CKC for more than 20 years
and have actively shown Airedales, Welsh and Norwich Terriers (oh, and Kathy
Archibald's wonderful Sheltie on that one occasion!). We have a reasonably
large breeding and boarding facility and are thoroughly immersed in dogs.
From a professional perspective, I am 'retired' from Senior Management in the
Federal Public Service. After graduation from University, my career in public
service began as a Customs Officer in Woodstock, NB. From there, I moved into
the field of Human Resource Management for Atlantic Canada with Transport
Canada. For ten years, I was a Labour Relations Manager, managed Recruitment,
Human Resource Planning, Training and Employment Equity for an organization in
excess of 2,000 staff. During this period, I worked for one year in
Newfoundland/Labrador from St John's to Goose Bay, Gander to Trepassey on
departmental reorganizations. Prior to leaving the Department, I authored the
Fleet Vessel Manning Study, a large body of work analyzing the Canadian Coast
Guard's personnel complement on ships, their roles, functions and requirements
for ship's complements in the face of government downsizing.
Leaving Transport, I was offered a more Senior position with Public Works
Canada as their Regional Business Manager. At that time, this area of
government was challenged to function as a private business and my role was to
develop and implement a process to effect that change. The multi-year budget
for my organization was $250,000,000 with an annual cashflow of approximately
$125,000,000. In addition to this role, I was challenged with several
colleagues to manage the development of a National computer system for project
planning and tracking.
From Business Management, I moved to the Strategic Planning area of the
Department after the amalgamation of Public Works and Government Services.
During this period, I chaired Boards tasked with the mandate to author several
National Policies and Procedures including the Federal Government's
Accessibility Policy - a document of which I am particularly proud. In
addition, I managed the strategic planning activities for land use planning,
infrastructure acquisition and divestiture and Grants in Lieu of Taxes
throughout Atlantic Canada.
After 'retiring', Ken and I became active in community affairs, having moved
to rural Nova Scotia (15 minutes from Halifax airport). Ken is Chair of the
County Health Board while I have chaired the County's Regional Economic
Development Board, am on the Board of the CAP Committee and have developed and
offered a Basic Computer Skills training program for Seniors in the community,
training over 100 Seniors in computer use over the past two years.
Currently, I am President of the Atlantic Terrier Association, the Welsh
Terrier Association of Canada and a member of several other breed clubs
Nationally and Internationally. For the past several years, I have been the
CKC's Chair of the Examining Committee for NS and NF. I am a professional
writer and on the Board of Pets Atlantic magazine as well as a part-time
Communications Consultant in the areas of government and private sector policy
and training.
I offer this information as a snapshot of my experience that could be
important to the functioning of the CKC Board. With a solid background in
actively breeding and showing dogs for over two decades and in writing about
the dog fancy, in Human Resource Management, Business Management and Strategic
Planning as well as considerable experience in the Chair of both public and
private Boards, I believe my background is well suited to this Board at this
time.
Yours in dogs,
