Reese

Reese is an SPCA shelter dog who has lived with us since 2001.  Her age was estimated to be around 6 months old when she came to us.   Found running at large and spending several days in the shelter not adopted, we finally took her home.  She was hell on wheels the first week with us but settled in quite nicely.  Commonly known as the “Seal” (because of her infamous seal bark) she now rules the roost and keeps the younger ones in their place.  Everyone respects Reese in her role and she thrives on being the boss!!

She loves to be chased and if you watch her closely she can get anyone of the gang to chase her at full speed around the yard.  A smile on her face and she is the happiest dog alive!!

Wishbone

Wishbone is our other rescue and is 100% SPCA.  Just what you would want when you rescue a dog from the shelter but ten times better.  Wishbone’s owner passed away and when he wasn’t wanted by the family he ended up at the shelter.  Two minutes with him and you’re in love!!  He could be a mix of American Bulldog, maybe some Staffie or Valley Bull and probably Lab too but whatever it is he has made a wonderful addition to our house.   He joined us shortly after we lost our yellow lab, Chance and other shelter rescue Jack in 2002.

Wishbone is an extremely lovable dog who would rather be curled up on your lap than running in the yard.  He often forgets he’s 70+ pounds – I’m sure in another life he was a lap dog!!  All the Madabout girls absolutely love him and torment him for his attention.  He spends each night stretched out on "his" couch watching carefully over the girls while they sleep.  He you don’t find him there you’re sure to find him hiding in the spare room enjoying the only room with carpet!!

Although he can give anyone a run for their money in the yard, he is happier inside with his Dad or curled up on our bed.

Both Reese and Wishbone ARE loved and cherished members of the family and win the hearts of everyone that meets them.  They are regulars on the “show circuit” when we travel and everyone knows them by name.  Both are certified with St. John’s Ambulance in the Therapy Dog program and visit regularly.

We have been fortune enough to several that blend well together and get along.  The true Labrador temperament is evident in this family mix.

Wonderful Wishbone laps up the heroism

WISHBONE SITS attentively as the medal is presented.

The eight-year-old Staffordshire terrier mix watches his owner and trainer, Janice Kivimaki of Porters Lake, receive a serving grade investiture from St. John Ambulance for her work in the dog therapy program.

Lt.-Gov. Mayann Francis presents awards to 22 people for heroism, service to the order and special commendation.

Wishbone later mingles at a reception, revelling in the attention as he’s patted. He perks up noticeably when Ms. Francis scratches his neck affectionately.

"He loves to be around people, adores attention and relishes people touching him," says Janice, who co-ordinates the visiting program of about 30 dogs of all breeds who bring joy to seniors’ homes.

Janice, who rescued Wishbone from a shelter when he was three, breeds Labrador retrievers.

"We have 14 dogs, so Wishbone enjoys the one-on-one time he can spend with me when we visit. It’s an excuse for the dog to get free love," she says with a laugh. "As soon as I put on my volunteer shirt, he hops around, knowing where we’re going. At the residences, he’s even snuggled in bed with invalid seniors who are agreeable to that."

The annual ceremony, held at St. Agnes Church in Halifax, also invested navy lieutenant Brenda Nelson in the service grade. Brenda is volunteer superintendent of the 488 Halifax Division. As membership co-ordinator, she has increased volunteer numbers from the mid-teens three years ago to almost 50 today. The volunteers are responsible for providing first-aid service at public events.

"Wishbone wags his tail, watching everyone honoured for their accomplishments. There’s a hint of a doggy smile. Perhaps he’s thinking of all the good things he has done, too.
