First Series

Starters: Diesel (1), Ella (4), Trip (7), Max (10), Sophie (12), Scout (14), Dallas (16), Kodak (19)

Rotation is 1, 6, 11, 16

Test Description:

1st Series - Land Triple with middle Distance Retired Gun and Honor

The test was run from the top of small mound that was on top of a hill.  The test was set up on one side of a small valley such that the dogs had to run down the front side of the valley before heading up the back side of the valley.  The cover was patchy and heavy with alder saplings (also called aspen in some regions) as well as jack-pine saplings.

The order was right at 110yds, middle at 150yds, left at 95yds with all birds thrown to the left. The right gun retired as soon as the dog was released for the go-bird. The right and middle birds were somewhat tight, but the real factor was the cover which prevented a straight line to any of the falls.

Most dogs who picked up did so because they ended up at the middle visible guns when sent for the right retired gun.  The cover was so thick most handlers could not see the dogs as they ran between gun stations.

Starters:

Test Description:

2nd Series - Land Blind with Poison Bird

Callbacks:

The running line was moved behind and left of the 1st series mat.  The blind was run 90degrees to the right of the first series marks.

The line was on the side of a slope that ran the entire length of the line to the blind.  The wind was brisk from  right to left (ie., pushing dogs down the ridge).  A poison bird was thrown on the right side of the line to the blind, approx 12yds off line.

The distance was approx. 225yds

Third Series

Starters:

Test Description:

Water Blind Over Point with angle entry over Log

The entry was difficult to get, the line was angle down a very steep shoreline which put them out of sight for a brief time.  The line carried 5-6yds off a straight shoreline before they navigated over a point that had two decoys 5yds offline.  Once back into the water they approached a very steep and uninviting shoreline.

The total distance was approx. 180yds.

Fourth Series

Test Description:

Water Double with Long Retired

The running mat was placed on the backside of the point used in the 3rd series with the flagging tape from the blind still in place.

The double was thrown down the shore and the order was long gun first and short gun second.  The gunners were situated on the side of a very steep shoreline and both throws were angle-back and the birds were landing well up the bank.  

The long gun retired as soon as the dog was send for the go bird.

There were several significant factors at work;  the choppy water, strong left to right wind, the imposing length of water facing the dogs (I could not see the end of the pond approx. 1000yds away).  This double took as long as 20 minutes per dog, slightly faster for fast swimmers.

Test Description:

Land Triple with Middle Retired Gun

The setup was placed on the side of a long hill. 

The order was middle retired at 110yds, left at 125yds, long right at 180yds.  The middle and left guns were approx the same distance from line with the long gun tight to the middle retired.

All three guns were very tight, however there was enough separation between the long go bird and the middle retired that almost all handlers sent for the long right go bird first, left visible gun second and the middle retired gun last.

Test Description:

Double Land Blind with two Visible Gunners

The running mat was moved several yards left of the first series running mat and the test run 90 degrees left of the first series.  

The left blind was approx. 85yds and the initial line was across the side of a deep ditch.  The right blind was approx 160yds.  A set of two visible bird planters sat in chairs between the two blinds.

Third Series

Test Description:

Water Blind with tight shoreline

The original blind was approx 220 yds, run between two massive points.  Judges instructions were that if you went out of sight behind any of the points you would be dropped.  This setup was short lived when a family of beavers with pups popped up in the test.  After waiting for a short time the test was scrapped and we moved approx 10 miles to an alternate site for the 3rd and 4th series.

The new 3rd series was set up when I arrived.  It was a down the shore blind with a challenging entry due to thick cover at the shoreline.  It would be possible to loose a dog before they even hit the water as you could not see them enter the water or attempt a cheat down the left shoreline. 

The distance was approx 225yds.

Fourth Series

Test Description:

Water Triple with Long Retired Gun

This was the toughest series of the weekend.  The line to the long retired gun was over a point and old fall for the middle visible gun.  

The order was long retired at 300yds, middle at 80yds, right at 40yds.

Any one of the several significant factors could finish your day.  The wind from left to right pushed dogs back on to the point when sent for the long retired.  If they made it back into the water, many dogs would drift out of sight to the right.  The water was so large that it required a huge amount of courage to get a dog to look out and stay relaxed for the long retired.  Also, there were not many features on the far shoreline, it was all sand, rocks and saplings.
