A Quick Look At: Bilious Vomiting Syndrome

Also Known As:

Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome, Bilious Attacks

Symptoms:

Dog vomits yellow bile, normally either early in the morning or late at night.

Cause:

Bilious Vomitting is usually caused by bile leaking from the intestines into the stomach. The bile acts as an irritant to the lining of the stomach, causing the dog to be ill. Hereditability is unknown.

Treatment:

It is imperative that other conditions be ruled out (i.e., kidney or liver disorders, pancreatitis, etc.) through consultation with a veterinarian, however the most common treatment for this condition is to split the dog’s feedings. By not allowing the stomach to become empty for long periods of time the stomach does not become irritated and vomiting is prevented. Feeding twice per day, at 12 hour intervals, should be sufficient to prevent further illness.
